SE2 – A Kiss of Perfect Proportion

“Gentleman,” Prince Jansekadé announced, “Here I must take my leave from you. Bishop Malabranca, you have my gratitude. I know that you are honorable men, and now that honor has been satisfied, I shall leave this matter in your capable hands.”

“Thank you, your Majesty. Captain, please escort His Lordship—”

“Your Grace, my compliments to your Captain, but I would ask that Lady Yale bear me thence,” the Prince said, extending his hand to Tristanué.

The Bishop consented. Tristanué took the Prince’s hand, and together they left the map room. They spoke to each other, but so softly no one else could overhear.

At the door, Prince Jansekadé turned to Tristanué, closer than he had been before. “I pray to see you again, my Tristanué,” Prince Jansekadé promised, gazing down into her. And it was there, that a most remarkable woman, strong in her own right, wished to luxuriate in the strength of another. Leaning forward, the Prince put his right hand under her left arm, his palm tenderly cupping the swell of her breast in a gesture a little bold, yes, but not brazen. At his touch, she let out a little gasp. Then, holding her chin with his other hand, he gave her a kiss of perfect proportion. It was neither over-pressing nor powerless, but moderating between the two, elaborating on her expectations immediately after the touch of his lips had redefined them.

It could be said a perfect kiss does not leave the same person on whom it falls. The Prince’s kiss was surely not his first, and would have secured his legend if it had been his last, if only in her mind. After lingering on her blue eyes, he slipped away, repairing to the evening duties of his hereditary office.

As for Tristanué, she remained under the archway, wholly rinsed of politics, slain by a kiss.

Here, her upbringing diverged from the harsh utilitarian course of political romance, such as Shin Shadane or her scheming mother pursued, both warring for equality, who perceived love as the crash of one against the other, a stalemate of equals, captors evading capture, the crack of rushing rams, but Tristanué did not.

She had no desire to prove her equality beyond a small margin of claims: her family argued for more and Nature for the rest. Her name was her reward and her retribution, and surely a Prince would know the great means of one and the terrible measure of the other. It was precisely because they were not equal, that this Prince bedewed her with ever braver touches and glances.

He was a Man with all his rights and powers and privileges.

She was a Woman with all her rights and powers and privileges.

Yes, he was a prince, and she was a princess.

Desiring to be desired, wanting to be wanted, she would, nonetheless, here, not take: she would be taken. Only in his audition was the Prince’s endurance demanded, patience put to field, a gentle sequence of approved surrenders, honor fully examined, with the full expectation that if won, her love would never require it again. She had told the Prince with her eyes how she wished to be courted, and in time, conquered, and having understood all her twinkles and blinks, he had inverted the play. Now, it was the Prince who was putting her patience to the test, tantalizing her with a slow kindling audit of her wishes.

“Exiled knights, backsliders, and renegades all have one thing in common: they are faithless. Disloyal. Given time, the faithless and disloyal always come to violence. Men who do not kneel kill every bit as much as those who do. Religion offers neither opportunity nor excuse to men who refuse it—yet do they not destroy withal? As it is written: ‘unfounded fears are the first we find.’ Lest the gallows give them a yank, an anarchist today is an anarchist tomorrow, and the cruel today will be cruel tomorrow.” Allesson surmised, “Thus, they will attack.”

“Why?” Sujonjuween asked.

“Why not? When all his masquerades and contrivances fail him, a man always falls back to his nature, whatever it is—good or bad. No man can escape the reflexes of his own soul, be they for good or be they for evil. You said the men of the Wounded Reliance are anarchists. Well, an anarchist is a small man who bays after lawlessness but calls it liberty. He is not big enough to be a man of fellowship, or peace, or gentle faith. His hand is always on his hilt, ever ready to draw his sword and swing away anything that calls him to law, method, or better moods. Compassion, cooperation, and charity are foreign to him. And if this Wounded Reliance is comprised of such men—small men who hate authority—they will inevitably overthrow their leader or die trying,” Allesson speculated, remembering the words of Andom: Better these rotted witches than that Lord of Discord; he is no subtle nail. “But here, far from their home, they dare not reveal themselves lest the entire continent turn against them.”

Many Strange Secrets

For a time, they just ate and drank, and though he offered his best stories, he sensed she kept hers to herself. At first, he mistook her reserve for the decorum belonging to most semi-Saarkan maidens, but Sujon was not Nymirian. Free of any obligations of court or class, she kept her secrets less out of stateliness than strategy, as if there were still revelations that could compromise her. Otherwise, she possessed a spirited independence he envied. The more days she put behind her in this country, the more she appeared not to belong to them, wearing the hours like someone else’s clothes. She was carefree, and curious almost to the point of recklessness, like someone passing through a place with no knowledge of the dangers thereof. That she was wealthy, well-educated, and well-armed was as obvious as her dark southern look. She had arrived in the same week the Great Mountain had ground to a halt, and in no less company than Andom the Exile, a Well Known Man. Taken all together, Allesson could not decide if Andom was the witch’s quarry that night, or Sujonjuween. Maybe Suleon Preed was right: something was putting its wrench to the days, but he could not believe it was the affable old man he could not forget. Perchance Liren Moonsail coveted the priceless prismethyst set inside Sujonjuween’s necklace, a gem he was sure was worth a prince’s ransom. Allesson recalled how her jewel first shone that night: bright as the sun. Yet, he reasoned, it had shone not by its own power but by another it had soaked up, instantly charged by the shock and the shine of Andom’s true name: Penzéprazon. And that power, that presence, that name that dared not forbear its full and terrible power when called forth—lest it too be judged by itself—obliterated the witch Barbosheth who, in what would become her final blunder, incautiously spoke it. The masquerade of Andom was set forgivingly far from the bright office of Penzéprazon, far enough that men by their natural trades—commerce, communications, and even confrontations—could encounter and inquire of the former without invoking the perfect redress of the latter. By this dispensation, even malice was granted a season of mercy. Thus, Barbosheth had sold her own soul short.

Good Friends

As is common with old friends, particularly with good food and a warm hearth to huddle them, the Archduke’s business preoccupied them until they had reasoned the matter threadbare. Thereafter, as is wont with men who have experienced a great many trials and actions, some of which they could not guess how they survived, they turned to their best stories and their fathers’ songs. Few things are better than finding old allies in peculiar places, where gales of laughter and toasts and all the finer profits of fellowship exorcise all worries. Against these jollities, the worst storms rage in vain. After many hours, when enthusiasm and flame had both diminished, and all had fallen away to wine-sleep, including Brandt, Allesson found his father sitting alone, ruminating over his visit to the Ligarias. After a silence, Branadan expounded upon the White Drive, in no small way amazed by its design. Allesson listened, committing his father’s review to memory, word for word, as Branadan speculated over the Archduke’s demands. They spoke long into the night, meditating on those nuances only engineers, architects, and artists find of interest. Alongside this, Allesson told him of the generosity of the Rainglaives. Later, when the major points—and no few minor ones—had been enumerated and examined, Allesson revealed the three gems to his father.

As he expected, even Branadan, with all his travels, had not seen their like. And though he felt he could, Allesson chose not to speak of the return of Urnloris, their fight in the temple, or the flame-haired stranger who brought it so suddenly to an end.

These were mysteries, ones he was content to keep within his soul.

Boy Hudd

“Is that the man? That Prince of Wands who stalks you? You, Sir! You scoundrel! I’ll tear your lace curtains down!” Hudd roared.

Some distance away by the tower, Allesson reacted to the man’s challenge.

“Yes, you! You meddler! I’ve a dozen knocks for you! I’ll mishandle you in a way the best prayers won’t repair! Yes, I’ll beat you with your own bones—!” the man raged, at least until Sujonjuween rose up on her toes and whispered something to him along the lines that the young man he was threatening was, in fact, his landlord by the Archduke’s own decree. That would have been enough, for even Boy Hudd gave deference to the over-strong Archduke of Nymiria, but it was her acquaintance with Allesson, more than anything else, that kept the mercenary from leaping from the wagon and charging Branadan’s startled son.

“You’re all right by me, child!” chortled the burly, fierce-featured man whose look, for the moment, was blushed with laughter. “Are you sure I can’t hurt someone on your behalf?”

“Thank you, good sir,” she said, “but I am safe. Should trouble return, may I call on you?”

“Aye, it’d be my pleasure to disjoint that blackguard prince for you, for I find you a very likable lass. A lady of the first water. You stand in the good graces of Boy Hudd, and my danger outclasses all others,” he bragged. “As for you, sir,” Hudd shouted at Allesson, “I took you for a man deserving of a great many bruises, but the lady offers up the best whispers on your behalf!”

“Thank you, sir, but the Sideleers may have won more of the day than me,” Allesson deflected, being uncomfortable with overpraise.

“No, sir,” Larner said. “That’s not how I see it. Not at all. Those Sideleers took the field sure enough, but they were too long in coming to my aid, to say nothing of saving my children. No, sir. It was you I saw in my dreadful hour when my soul had no escape, not those knights. And this woman,” Larner looked to Sujonjuween, again inspecting her curious gear and lingering on her plush southern features, “hers is the voice my children heard, comforting them, promising them salvation. She and she alone withstood those terrors that stalked them, not those brash cavaliers. No, it was you, the pair of you, who have kept me a father and by faith, you have my full measure of loyalty, sir.”

Wynther Wyngard

Wynther Wyngard is the daughter of King Wander Wyngard, Lord of the Yorm-Tamers. Along with her father, she is among the first of the ancient House of Wyngard to arrive on the New World. The name Wyngard is a portmanteau from the term “wing guardian”. The House of Wyngard was originally established to guard the eastern border of Nymagaul from winged terrors — dragons. Their many lands were eventually declared hereditary estates, granted sovereignty by a royal decree of King Lancider, and ratified by the Sword of Exaltion. They were also covenanted bound to the Nymguardean kings in perpetuity in their defense of the Eastern-most provinces.

Wynther Wyngard appears as a tall woman with blond-white hair, alabaster complexion, and ice-blue eyes. Despite her lithe appearance, Wynther possesses the legendary strength of the Wyngards. Second only to the D’Arlenes, the Wyngards are feared in battle due to their shield-splintering strength, great speed, endurance and fearlessness.

She has six brothers — Welvarend, Wulver, Wyr, Weyn, Gaxan and Gallant — and one sister named Splendor whom she calls “Gilly”. Her father’s name is Wander, her mother Galea.

In battle she uses a flying great-sword nicknamed Taa Laimé (literally “Tough Luck”).

Early wardens of House Wyngard displayed formidable powers against the Mantichora (magic-bearing creatures) and became legendary hunters of those creatures for millennia. The exact origin of their influence over Manitchora (or Yorm) is shrouded in mystery, but lies in contradistinction to the powers belonging to the House of Morgandy: where the House of Morgan submitted to the authority of dragons, the House of Wyngard rejected it.

Free Chapter from Elsuon

Due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak, and realizing a lot of businesses, gyms, restaurants, and corporate offices have closed for summer, there are going to be a lot of people stuck at home with not a lot to do.

On the fifteenth day of the last month, I was, on the account of my good reputation and the quick pen of the Right Honourable Lord Hoel, Master of the Ministry of His Majesty’s Separate Matters, pressed into service on the matter of the young Tristanué, a lady of our esteemed allies, the House of Yale.

On the details of Lady Tristanué’s arrival in Anzioch, and her many interventions on behalf of our brave countrymen so nobly entrenched there, I have submitted a full report to the aforementioned Right Honourable Lord Hoel and his many deputies. I am told redacted records of those events are available within the House of Lords, while unredacted sources, bound to privacy by the living terms of the Paledragon Amendment, remain in the custody of the Ministry of His Majesty’s Separate Matters.

Given the stirring but sensitive nature of the Sabler victory in Anzioch, not the least of which saw the lawful coronation of Silayujon as the Queen of Sanzakarth and the enfolding of the Western Fortunes into our noble Commonwealth, I have been asked and authorized to provide you, sir, with an ongoing summary—a sort of traveling journal—of Lady Tristanué’s actions and movements subsequent to the Battle of Anzioch, including her ongoing work for the Ministry of His Majesty’s Separate Matters. Pertaining to her secret orders, I regret, I may only be able to report on the wrapping of such surprises, but not the content thereof.

Unfortunately, my specialty lies in the baser crafts of warfare; nonetheless, I shall invoke the best angels of my mood and my manners, to present an accurate accounting of Ms. Yale’s actions. I pray you to forgive the common hand of an untitled agent of His Majesty.
