According to legend, the Prince of the Tyrinthian Shore drowned 396 witches in a single day in a political purge of hex-wielding agitators and anarchists. In their doom, the witches collectively cursed the waves in which they drowned as The Witchtides, granting command of them to whoever would avenge them.

SE | Relaxation – Dream-Rains of Trastamare

Writing is a very intimate experience, and as a pluviophile, I love the sound of rain or feel peaceful on rainy days. When I read, write, edit, or even design, I listen to Nature’s sounds, such as the soughing waves of the seashore, rain, thunder, wind across the dunes, or even crackling fire. The elemental sounds are soothing to me, so I reasoned they might be southing to you. #rain #relaxing #relaxing #mood

This video is aimed at poets, writers, and artists, but anyone can enjoy it.

Trastamare is the southernmost province in the North Fortunes and is famous for its rains.

“Prince and prophet, king and maiden, Mood and memory and magic bare,
Are in northern mists so gently laden, Where dream the Rains of Trastamare.”

This poem alludes to the enchanted Rains of Trastamare, which bestow dreams and wisdom to those on whom they fall.

There is a local adage: “You do not dream the Rains of Trastamare, but the Rains of Trastamare dream you.”

The Savage Errands series is a fantasy adventure series set in the ancient city of Anzioch in the desert kingdoms of Sanzakarth. The series revolves around Princess Tristanué Yale, who travels to Anzioch to aid a noble order of knights in liberating the city from a mad queen and defending it from a rapacious warlord set on capturing it.

The World of Elsuon is based on decades of role-playing games with close friends. With all the main arcs finished, it makes sense to translate these cherished games into YouTube videos for other authors, writers, gamers, artists, designers, readers, or other communities to enjoy. Videos and YouTube shorts are extracted from voluminous game notes, gameplay, and recollections from gamers. I began publishing these adventure stories on Amazon Kindle a few years ago and will add weekly Substack serialized adventures in early 2023. Lastly, I will publish these adventures as audiobooks through our YouTube channel. Subscribers and members on YouTube, Patreon, and Substack will have access to premium content.

The World of Elsuon Support Page – Patreon

Although I have been a professional designer most of my life, I have always enjoyed telling stories. The World of Elsuon spans decades of role-playing games and adventures which have only, after some effort, been combed through and collated down to a sleek imaginative canon.

The first book in the World of Elsuon was Elsuon: The Stonecutter’s Son. This book is available on Amazon Kindle and is Part I of Book I.

Elsuon is ultimately a trilogy spanning seventy chapters. Set the earliest in my world, it is the foundation on which everything else stands.

The second book I published is Savage Errands – Vol. 1 – The Sixth Kuinkazner. It, too, is available on Amazon. Unlike Elsuon which is a much deeper read, Savage Errands is a quicker set of adventures that center on the House of Yale. The follow-up, Savage Errands – Vol. 2 – The House of Lamentou, will be out soon too.

My fourth book will be Now Talishain, a serialized story on Royal Road. It too will be limited to 70 chapters, but being serialized, will make for a much faster read for those who like to binge through their fantasy.

My fifth book with The Girl with the Glass Ring and will begin as soon as I complete Now Talishain.

I hope to offer readers an excellent work written by an elegant hand. You will not find gratuitous sexual situations, violence, gore, or foul language in my work.

SE2: The Duel with Judaco

The fight was a furious one for the man was no novice. More than once Baloroy felt his breath catch in his throat, terrified he would have to report the death of the princess to higher powers such as Malabranca or Hoel, to say nothing of the implacable Prince of Wands. The swordplay between them was so fast, so frenetic, it was hard to make out their moves. It was more a scintillating cloud of stabbing, slashing, and swooshing steel, ringing with blocks, repostes, and parries. It did not take long for Tristanué to deduce the man’s style: he was all steel. Never punching or kicking himself, he never expected them from his young opponent. She was happy to wreck his assumption, frequently sending him back with kicks to the body or elbows to his temple.

In battle, Tristanué always came on strong, overwhelming her opponents with one of Jocasta Valan’s furious, spinning blitzes. However, when confronted with someone equal in skill to herself, she switched to counter-attacks, confident she could discover weaknesses in any opponent’s style in the early part of a duel. So, for the first two interminable minutes of their fight, Tristanué constantly retreated, narrowly escaping swings that would have swept her head from her neck. But it was just about then, just one-hundred-and-twenty seconds past their last words, that the man began to repeat himself. Yes, he had come to the end of his training. His style was folding back on itself.

In the next second, her footwork was slightly different and her short swords poised at new angles in new places. Judaco misinterpreted these variations as exhaustion, but no sooner had he done so than a great spray of blood erupted between them—

The fight was over.

The Sablers gasped then cheered.

Tristanué delivered the killing thrust then circled out, almost skipping, catching her breath. It was an act of supreme confidence—or showmanship—turning her back to the raider but she knew the match was over. Judaco stood there, pierced front to back by the Sinister Minister. His strength vanished as his blood jetted out of him. Weakening, he dropped his half-swords.

Circling back to the raider, she put her hand on her blade.

“Sorceress! You struck without pity!” he moaned faintly. “Hear now my last words—”

“Save them for devils,” she replied indifferently. Pulling her sword out of his heart, Judaco squealed, dropped to his knees, gasped for breath then fell over on this side. “You listened to them your entire life, now they can return the favor.”

“Where we are from, our beloved Royos, it is my grandfather’s name that daunts the nations, even in rumor.”

“You’ve proven that time and again,” Michon agreed.

“If this prince truly desires me and if he can win me,” she said, a twinkle of rebellion in her eyes, “my grandfather will be in his corner. But, if this prince thinks he can manipulate the Prince of Surlakeen with deceitful pecks across the cheeks of his granddaughters, he will crash neck-first into a Consequence unlike any other. Alas, the death of such men—and make no mistake, there have been many such men here, there, and everywhere between—would be the stuff of proverbs if only the world could remember they even existed.”

“I am getting the distinct impression that I should send your grandfather a ham for the next holy occasion, if not sooner,” Malabranca said.

Andolond chuckled.

“No need, Lord Malabranca, I would tell you my letters keep you in his good graces, as your character is often the theme of my correspondence, so it wouldn’t be unfair to say you’ve saved yourself—as all you Sablers often do. You are an eyewitness to me, and I am an eyewitness to you: no faults to date.”

“Likewise, Lady Yale,” Malabranca replied, extending his hand.

Tristanué shook the archbishop’s hand.

“Here we stand friends in a country so stripped of friendship,” he said.

“We will remind them of it,” Tristanué promised.

“Hear, hear,” Ambassador Tantarghaston cheered.

“Say, I am looking for Baloroy and Hax,” Mardon said.

“Who’s asking?” Baloroy asked, reflecting on the bishop’s surprising speed.

“Someone who doesn’t want to slap you, hang you, or put you in prison.”

“I must say, with no small measure of pride, that such men do not exist. I, therefore, deduce you are dead,” Baloroy said, taking a strong sniff. “Sorry, old shade. It will take more than bedsheets and rattling chains to turn my feet cold. And if you are here to haunt me, I am afraid you have the wrong man. I’m fairly certain I didn’t kill you. But if I did, well, Fate had it in for you.” Baloroy drank down a goblet of ale, turning curious. “How’s the afterlife?”

What woman would want a peacock when she can have a prince, even if the royalty is in the noble counsel of his own heart? I tell you—the heart! That is where the crown fits best if there is room for it. Or what man would want a harlequin when he could have Proya’s softer wisdom, the silken sways of milk and good manners, all to himself? A man may ever only change a woman’s last name by adding his to it, but a woman, a good woman—Proya! A Long Time Away

I had to step away for almost eighteen months to be the full-time on-site custodian of my elderly and declining parents who were left in medical limbo during the COVID-19 pandemic which froze their transition (along with millions of others) to the urgent, long-term state-assisted care they require. In less than a week after publishing my first novel Elsuon, my father required emergency open-heart surgery. And he has not much improved since then.

For this reason, my entire publication schedule for The World of Elsuon and many other works has been delayed. Works that should have come out in 2020 will instead be coming out in 2022.

I apologize for the delay but my commitment to my family supersedes all others.

With everything slowly starting back up, and over a year of backlog finally unwinding, I will be able to return to The World of Elsuon.

Many of you have commented on my work both publicly and privately. I am thankful for your feedback which has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive. And I thank you for your patience.

I wish you all a swift return to the former rhythms of your lives.

SE2 – Caliston Confronts Princess Tristanué

Caliston was the last to turn, and the image he found waiting for him was as breathtaking as it was baffling. During the skirmish with the intervening falcon, the girl did not flee. She stood there, wearing nothing but an abiding blue lambion. In her right hand, she held a sword by its sheath. Her hair dye had washed away entirely in the rain, running down her body in black streaks, leaving a wet slope of blue. These points aside, she stood in a most bare estate, divested and vulnerable, her figure exhibited up to, but just shy of, an absolute review.

“Abrazor!” Caliston lusted. “Truly, if allure were might, you could stand there without a wink of worry, for you would truly be invincible. Yes, Sizan was right. You pretend up to the best of goddesses.” He extended a hand to Tristanué. “The man who would have you is dead, but another stands in his place. I am Caliston and I have never been beaten in battle. The granddaughter of the Loring King remained silent.

“I claim you, woman. Now come to me and be safe,” he said.

The other men looked on in silence, waiting to see how the stranger would respond.

When Caliston realized she would not surrender to him, he looked up to the sky and wiped the drizzle from his brow. “What is this place? How can it be so hot when the sky has wept so long? Where are the cold rains of my youth?” he asked, glancing at the men behind him before recasting his stare on Tristanué. “Now, I see. A sun rises in your beauty and no rain falls cold around you. You are this night’s very fever. I dare not touch you lest I sear. This shall speak for me,” he said, turning his sheathed sword in his hand. “I wonder: can your kiss melt bronze? If not, my steel is safe. Last chance, woman: come to me.”

Tristanué’s silence was her rejection.

“Very well,” he said. Drawing his scimitar he gestured to her bare bosom. “What I cannot have, I deny to all others. I am going to cut those off you, magaru. No Yales will ever drink your deceitful milk!”

SE2 – The Praise of Princes

“Princess Tristanué Azhora Yale!” Jansekadé stood, exulting. “Daughter of Prince Cenodorn. Having never been closer to you than this, I know the truth of it: Proya must be the author of your allure, for no spell of Rove Kisaya ever conjured a more perfect vision than you. I would admire your singular beauty, but only if I were a fool. No, your look strikes not once, but a hundredfold, as if your face were heaven’s own door; a host of perfect maidens beaming behind this one heavenly visage before me, excellent and unexampled.”

Tristanué gave a reverent nod. “You honor me, Your Highness.”

“I have not begun to honor you, Lady Yale,” Jansekadé said, his voice rich with surety and promise.

“You make me a legend at first sight?”

“Without delay,” Jansekadé declared proudly, walking towards her. “Lest another intercept your wink, shove in, and steal this privilege from me.”

“And if I prove too primitive for your praise?”

“Then God will have betrayed Himself, and the world will end.”

“Such danger! I will try to live up to your expectations.”

“You’ve already exceeded them, Lady Yale. With every blink and every breath, you leap beyond my forecast like a star shooting from one end of heaven to the other.” Arriving at her, he stood.

“You seem intent on keeping me in the heavens,” she replied playfully.

“Miracles aren’t miracles in heaven, but here, here they are wonders and should be honored as such,” the prince said. “As you have so instantly proven.”

“And Syn Shadane? What review did she earn?”

“Ah, I suppose no talk of heaven is complete without mentioning its evictions; those devils no longer fit for it,” the prince said. “Syn Shadane believes I have come to see her crowned queen of this very city.”

“And have you?”

“I am here for many reasons. None of them involve that woman or her mother. Even if I possessed some passing interest in her claims―which I don’t―a mere glance proves her war chest lacks the opulence of yours.” Taking her hand and kissing it gently, he said, “Come; I will show you to your seat, Lady Yale.”

SE2 – A Kiss of Perfect Proportion

“Gentleman,” Prince Jansekadé announced, “Here I must take my leave from you. Bishop Malabranca, you have my gratitude. I know that you are honorable men, and now that honor has been satisfied, I shall leave this matter in your capable hands.”

“Thank you, your Majesty. Captain, please escort His Lordship—”

“Your Grace, my compliments to your Captain, but I would ask that Lady Yale bear me thence,” the Prince said, extending his hand to Tristanué.

The Bishop consented. Tristanué took the Prince’s hand, and together they left the map room. They spoke to each other, but so softly no one else could overhear.

At the door, Prince Jansekadé turned to Tristanué, closer than he had been before. “I pray to see you again, my Tristanué,” Prince Jansekadé promised, gazing down into her. And it was there, that a most remarkable woman, strong in her own right, wished to luxuriate in the strength of another. Leaning forward, the Prince put his right hand under her left arm, his palm tenderly cupping the swell of her breast in a gesture a little bold, yes, but not brazen. At his touch, she let out a little gasp. Then, holding her chin with his other hand, he gave her a kiss of perfect proportion. It was neither over-pressing nor powerless, but moderating between the two, elaborating on her expectations immediately after the touch of his lips had redefined them.

It could be said a perfect kiss does not leave the same person on whom it falls. The Prince’s kiss was surely not his first, and would have secured his legend if it had been his last, if only in her mind. After lingering on her blue eyes, he slipped away, repairing to the evening duties of his hereditary office.

As for Tristanué, she remained under the archway, wholly rinsed of politics, slain by a kiss.

Here, her upbringing diverged from the harsh utilitarian course of political romance, such as Shin Shadane or her scheming mother pursued, both warring for equality, who perceived love as the crash of one against the other, a stalemate of equals, captors evading capture, the crack of rushing rams, but Tristanué did not.

She had no desire to prove her equality beyond a small margin of claims: her family argued for more and Nature for the rest. Her name was her reward and her retribution, and surely a Prince would know the great means of one and the terrible measure of the other. It was precisely because they were not equal, that this Prince bedewed her with ever braver touches and glances.

He was a Man with all his rights and powers and privileges.

She was a Woman with all her rights and powers and privileges.

Yes, he was a prince, and she was a princess.

Desiring to be desired, wanting to be wanted, she would, nonetheless, here, not take: she would be taken. Only in his audition was the Prince’s endurance demanded, patience put to field, a gentle sequence of approved surrenders, honor fully examined, with the full expectation that if won, her love would never require it again. She had told the Prince with her eyes how she wished to be courted, and in time, conquered, and having understood all her twinkles and blinks, he had inverted the play. Now, it was the Prince who was putting her patience to the test, tantalizing her with a slow kindling audit of her wishes.
